when death was close enough to smell these walls held me so well after confronting a large rat something in me awakened I stopped turning away from those I knew even threw kisses to my favorite few the parakeet female watching nearby I asked her about the rat and dangers like that she told me we only fear the sky and what's above us have you tried to fly I had no answer crows nearby cackled and laughed afraid of rats what kind of bird is that they lifted themselves into the height turning and rising all out of sight I wasn't built like those crows my wings are small and so am I but another parakeet arrived the next day bright eyed and worn from far away he told me he left a house much like mine neglected and hollowed by design he said these folks of yours are so fine then offered a trade he would give me his freedom if I let him have mine I stood very still and came to learn for the first time freedom was mine I asked him what if we tried just part of the time he laughed and said why not live long enough we'll see what you find I remembered my wings small and weak the rat the fear, its reek I remembered the hours my humans spent giving me love and what that meant I told him no I am parakeet this is my realm I'm its king for now
